Some Relevance, Please!

Here’s a thought. There has been a gap of 95 days since the last test was played on March 5, 2014. Although this is a sign of what people want to see and what the administrators want to provide the world, it is important for test cricket to survive and most people who follow cricket would think that. That is something that is obvious and is not going to be the subject matter of this post.

What is probably important and has escaped the eyes of cricketers, cricket enthusiasts and administrators is having a mechanism where all formats co-exist, different cricket enthusiasts get to see the formats that they want to and the shortest form of the game being the most popular format is played for the longest duration in a year. Cricket, for years has tried to emulate football to attract more viewership and has always failed. Maybe, it’s time to think differently and accept the fact that it’ll never be as big as football. Accepting that doesn’t necessarily mean that cricket isn’t doing well, but will create opportunities among cricketing minds to make things better which brings me to my point. Cricket has Test Cricket which is hard to move on from because of all the culture that it brings along with it; there is limited overs cricket which brings all the funds. Hence, emulating Tennis which has 4 Grand Slams which are treated as the most special events and some other events should be the way to go. Every year should only have 3 test events lasting a month where the top 4 teams compete with no bi-lateral test series in between. The rest of the year should be packed with T20s and ODIs.
One game, too many events

The idea of having one limited overs world event every year is just far too many and is just ridiculous. There has been a lot of talk about the champions trophy being successful based on the previous tournament’s turnouts in England, but what everyone fails to realise is that most of the matches in the tournament were reduced to 20-30 over matches because of rain. The final which turned out to be quite a contest was a 20 over match. It just doesn’t make any sense to have one world event every year when there are so many bilateral series going on in between. The international schedule should go ahead with 3 Test events every year, bilateral ODI and T20 series interspersed with 1 ODI and 1 T20 world cup, once every 4 years, both being held in the same year. I believe that this schedule would provide a lot of relevance to the matches played. Re-organizing it to a schedule which has some relevance in terms of rivalry between teams is important for viewers to appreciate the competition and it is high time that this is done now rather than later given how fast things change in these times.

A Landmark Worth Remembering

This post is mainly for the people who are saying that Sachin's 100th century isn't that special because it came against Bangladesh. The others who don't think that way can read it and take pleasure in reminiscing all the great moments that this great man has provided over the past 23 years. First of all, saying that it's not that special because it came against Bangladesh is entirely wrong because Bangladesh are progressing well and they have shown signs of this in the ongoing Asia Cup, coming close to Pakistan's total in the opening game and beating India in their second. In fact their bowling attack is what they rely on to win matches most of the times. Getting a hundred off that attack is not as easy as everyone thinks. Secondly, there are opinions that when Sachin scores a century India lose which might have been true on so many occasions in the past. But, does that statement mean that Sachin is losing India games by scoring centuries? It doesn'...

Captains Of This Era

Captains of this era have all been the perfect ones for their respective countries, if one considers the situation that each country was in at the time of being made captain. Andrew Strauss, Graeme Smith, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Ricky Ponting have all been good captains given the records that they possess even after such lengthy stays at the international level as captains. The thing that was common amongst these people was that they all had a good base for them to start on. Strauss was probably the one amongst these four to have started on shaky ground. Statistics as Captain for each player.                               Three people who catch the eye are Michael Clarke, Misbah-ul-Haq and Darren Sammy. All these 3 have been captain for about the same number of Tests which is on...

ACA 2017/18: Falcons v/s Phoenix CC

The Falcons, with 2 victories on their back against ASU and Tucson Superkings at the start of 2018, entered Game 9 of their season to play Phoenix CC who were lurking at the bottom of the table. The Falcons, being favorites to win this game put on a thumping performance, bowling Phoenix CC out earlier on and wrapping the up target, ending the game at 13:33 local time. The game started with Phoenix CC winning the toss and electing to bat, and in the end, what seemed like the only thing that went in their way on the day. The Phoenix CC batting order never seemed to gain momentum even though they were able to maintain decent run rate of 4 an over as they lost wickets to some good bowling from the Falcons at such regular intervals that it almost seemed like it was all being played out from a script that was already written for them. At the end of 20 overs as the teams went into their drinks break, Phoenix CC had lost a few too many wickets to their liking even though they were trudgi...
